5th Annual Tri-State Juried Exhibition

August 17th to September 23rd, 2018

“Relishing Restraint” will explore how contemporary artists working today have embraced limitations imposed by space, finances, materials, identity, time (or otherwise) to enhance or transform their practice for the better.

Friday, September 7th 6-8pm

Regular gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:30pm at 575 Pacific Street.

While limitations are often considered negative or restrictive to daily life or artistic production, they have the potential to enhance both if embraced as a strength, as opposed to a weakness. Restraints compel us to respond to adverse situations in creative and unorthodox ways, with results that can be markedly complex and nuanced.

Many contemporary artists have appreciated these limitations over the years and produced significant bodies of work in response: the loss of a studio or the daily realities of a small, starter apartment may yield poignant work on a small scale; the birth of a child results in a manageable, daily drawing practice; the use of one material exploited to its full potential evolves into an all-encompassing large-scale installation; or, experimentation with an accessible, less costly paint produces a rich study in the versatility of its properties.

“Relishing Restraint” will explore how contemporary artists working today have embraced limitations imposed by space, finances, materials, identity, time (or otherwise) to enhance or transform their practice for the better.
