Off-Site Events & Programs
The LAA hosts and participates in many programs and events throughout the city. These opportunities help to raise awareness about the organization and its important work related to art and culture. Our artists also use these programs and events to promote themselves in the city and advance the mission of the LAA. Connections with other non-profit organizations and other departments and institutions in the city provide the LAA with a chance to participate with and support the wider arts community of Stamford. These efforts broaden our profile and facilitate a wider network of donors and supporters.

“The Loft Artists: Then and Now 40 Years of Art”
Last fall, the Loft Artists Association celebrated 40 years with a retrospective exhibit at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center, titled “The Loft Artists: Then and Now 40 Years of Art” including current and past members. Curated by Museum staff, the exhibit presented a historical representation of the LAA through the work of the artists that supported the organization through the years. Also presented were a historical timeline of the LAA and photographs of the original location at the Yale and Towne Lock Factory.
The Loft Artists Association was founded by the late sculptor, James Jackson Burt, who moved into the abandoned Yale and Town factory building in 1978. He was joined by Reuben Nakian, painter Sophia Gevas, photographer Bob Baldridge, sculptor Tom Fertig, folk art curator Dan Prince and the artist, teacher, and historian, Renee Kahn. The huge brick factory, built in 1868 in the South End of Stamford, was for two decades, home to a vigorous artist’s community. In 1988, the Loft Artists were honored in a major group exhibition curated by Dr. Robert Metzger at the Stamford Museum. This exhibition will attempt to re-create a portion of that exhibition combined with works by current members of the LAA.
Curated beautifully by Museum staff, the exhibits brings together over 100 artists all, at some point over the past 40 years, were members of the Loft Artists Association. A wonderful opportunity to experience the broad and diverse range of artistic talent that has continually made the LAA one of the area’s premier art organizations.
